History and Workings of the U.S. Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest judicial system in the country, tasked with knowing the Constitution through and through, making sure that our laws and policies observe to Constitution and its amendments.

What did you learn about the Supreme Court that you didn't already know?

One big fact that I didn’t know about the Supreme Court is the extensive process involved in reviewing cases. Knowing they receive around 7,000 petitions a year and only accepting about 100 for true consideration really surprised me. I never really gave it much thought of how many cases they see. I also really like how each petition, whether it was filed by a big time legal counsel or a prisoner in the US legal system, each get the same individual consideration, showcasing the court’s commitment to fair review.

What is the most important take-away point about the Supreme Court?

The most important thing I took away is the Supreme Court’s crucial role in understanding the Constitution and its power to influence significant national issues. The court's authority is established by public’s faith in the courts and impartialness. Despite their decisions sometimes being controversial, the Court’s legitimacy and effectiveness in shaping law and policy are always based on its commitment to the Constitution and its ability to address sometimes complex legal questions.

What was the most surprising thing you learned?

The most surprising aspect is the beyond rigorous nature of the Supreme Court’s decision-making process. The fact that each justice individually considers each petition, despite the high volume of cases, highlights the amount of commitment and dedication to the serious consideration involved in their work. The personal experience of each justice helps add a sense of realism to their more formal roles. - How did the video change the way you thought of the Supreme Court? The video didn't really change the way I felt about the Supreme Court. While it gave a very detailed insight into the Court's processes and the experiences of the justices, my overall understanding and perception of its role and function remained pretty much the same.
