I learned so much from everyone's presentations on a specific form of technology, but one stuck out to me the most. Motion picture technology invented an entire new world, giving birth to the film industry and irrevocably changing entertainment. Before film existed, most people enjoyed live performances and the printed word. With the invention of motion pictures, a new medium of storytelling of fiction and education came into light, placing narratives into an active, visual framework. The such ease with which this accessibility allowed audiences to relate to various themes and ideas created a shared cultural consciousness that still influences our lives.
Of course, motion picture technology does not come sans its set of negative impacts. For as much as it increased communication to facilitate such a fast rate of information flow in television and digital media, it also allowed easy misinformation and perpetuation of harmful stereotypes that were particularly rampant in its earlier years. The power of the moving image stirs emotions and can incite controversy, yet with it comes a certain responsibility for sifting fact from fiction. While going through the sea change that media is putting us through, it is paramount to recognize both the transformational benefits and pitfalls this incredible technology presents.
